The beautiful glossy cover lures you in but the pages in between are rather disappointing. There is a ton of "natural light" photography, which I find disappointing because it robs so many interiors of their patina and sheen; there are too many beautiful things trapped and sequestered in the shadows. The Givenchy spread was a let down. My heart sank when I saw the Green salon. I've seen it previously and it its sumptuous. But the spread was some 10 pages mostly filled with shadows and cavernous dark spots. The viewer is completely deprived of seeing how resplendent the salon is. The book, as one reviewer put it, is "fairly pedestrian". I would have been pissed if I had paid $85. For $56, I don't feel so betrayed. Historic Houses of Paris is truly resplendent.

Lovely book, resembles very much an earlier work by Nicolay Mazery -"The French Chateau"- including separate chapters on the French hunt, as un-chic as the English one. Likewise lots of pics of matronly chatelaines and hunters who really do add not anything to the book, nor are they particularly attractive on their own right. For pics of Baron de Rede and company, you're better off getting "Cafe Society" by Coudert. The interiors run along the lines of eclectic historicism -lots of 16th, 17th century and Regence rooms, but less on the classic Louis XV-XVI styles that I prefer. Some of the houses, like Givenchy's and Hotel Lambert have been photographed so often before, that this new selection pf pictures offers little new. Frankly a much better book by Flammarion is "Historic Houses of Paris" by Stella, with its superb selection of embassy pics. As for countryside chateaux, the book pasr excellenrce remains "The Splendors of France" -the modern publication of its type -and indeed, Nicolay-Mazery's selection of homes is -aside from the Anne de Poitiers castle- a lesser one in quality. The truth is that, in trying to make life in French chateaux and hotels as palatable as that in their English counterparts, Nicolay Mazery has unwittingly perhaps underscored how inferior they are to English country houses -much better preserved and more grandiose, though not some much by virtue of their owners' aesthetic commitments, as by reason of England's more fortunate modern history, unmarred by wars, upheavals, etc. For English interiors see the new publication "The Drawing Room" with very grand interiors.

Nice but not enough entries like the Givenchy salon on the cover. Most entries are fairly pedestrian. Domage.

This is an incredible book! One of my favotires. A true treasure!! Anyone who has ever even painted a wall should have this book. Thank you so much for all involved.

Very good book on a beautiful subject. Almost all the photos are in color; there a few period black & white shots of "the old days " to make life interesting. My only criticism is that are a great many photos of details such as drapes, furniture, paintings, and so forth. Some people may want those, but I prefer photos of the overall rooms and staircases.
